DIYS.com, interested in providing quality recipes to home cooks, sought to discover the top traditional desserts each European country is most likely to search recipes for. Using online analytics tool Ahrefs and Tasteatlas.com, DIYS.com established the traditional dessert recipes with the highest search volumes.

The Most Popular Traditional Dessert Recipes in Romania

In Romania, the most popular traditional dessert recipe is for gogoși/donuts. The dessert has 94,800 annual online searches on average. Second and third place belong to mucenici (38,400 annual online searches on average) and amandine (37,200 annual online searches on average).

Savarine/honey pot (19,200) and plăcintă cu mere/apple pie (15,600) rank fourth and fifth respectively.

Other European Countries

In Spain, magdalenas is the most popular traditional dessert recipe searched for. The fairycake-like cake, which is perfect with a cafe con leche, has 144,000 annual online searches on average. Second and third place go to arroz con leche (132,000 annual online searches on average) and leche frita (85,200 annual online searches on average).

Within the UK, flapjack recipes are searched for a whopping 1,644,000 times a year on average – the equivalent of nearly 5,000 times a day! Made up of rolled oats, butter, sugar, and golden syrup or honey, the tasty treat’s name was first recorded in a poem written in 1620, and established in its current form in 1930. Other popular traditional UK dessert recipes include carrot cake (an average of 1,284,000 annual searches) and scones (732,000 annual searches on average).

Sweden is next with its top-searched dessert’s recipe (kladdkaka) Googled 696,000 times a year on average. The popular Swedish cake has a gooey interior and a crisp exterior. Våfflor and knäck are also favourites among the locals are they are searched for 144,000 and 111,600 times annually on average respectively.

In the Netherlands, the local’s favourite traditional dessert recipe to search for is pannenkoek – 576,000 annual searches on average. Pannenkoek (pancake) is famous for adding fruit to the batter with a popular variation being ‘pannenkoek met appel’. Appeltaart and appelflap are also popular with search results for their recipes Googled 105,600 and 97,200 times a year on average respectively.

In Poland, the most popular traditional dessert recipe is for piernik. The dessert has 240,000 annual online searches on average. Second and third place belong to racuchy (228,000 annual online searches on average) and sernik (204,000 annual online searches on average).

Linzer augen from Austria is Googled 372,000 annually on average. Other favourite dessert recipes that Austrian locals search for are kaiserschmarrn (an average of 132,000 annual online searches) and krapfen (51,600 annual online searches on average).
