Paciurea’s ‘Earth chimera’ broke the record at Artmark auction

The autumn auction – Top 100 Great Masters of Romanian Art ended on Wednesday evening with a total of almost EUR 800,000 and an 82 per cent award rate. The hall at Athénée Palace Hilton seemed too small for the 350 art lovers came to experience what would have followed to be the most pleasant surprise of the evening, the extraordinary record of the sculptor Dimitrie Paciurea with his opera “Earth chimera” (knocked down for EUR 70,000, more than triple than the initial price).

The biggest buzz of excitement of the eager audience began when the 121 Lot was called, “The acrobat’s little girl” by Nicolae Tonitza. With a EUR 75,000 award, the star of the Autumn Auction ended the season on the first place. The artist’s drawings were also highly appreciated: “The acrobat’s child” was sold for Euro 2.750 and “If Christ returns among men” was sold for EUR 2,250.

The small painting representing the national painter’s preferred theme, “Oxcart” by Nicolae Grigorescu, has found its place in the collection of a Greek art lover, great admirer of Grigorescu, being awarded for EUR 62,000. Other important adjudications for the share of traded artists were: “A family evening” by Ipolit Strâmbu (awarded for EUR 11,000), “La fiancée du roi musicien” by Jules Perahim (awarded for EUR 15,000), “Garden” by Horia Bernea (awarded for EUR 12,000, six times more than the initial price), “Night at Vitré” by Eusta?iu Stoenescu (awarded for EUR 19,000), “The fright” by Corneliu Baba (awarded for EUR 40,000), “View towards Place Dauphine” by Theodor Pallady (awarded for EUR 42,500).

The results of the Autumn Auction pave the way for the two large events in December, which will end the year in a festive note. The Christmas Auction (December 9) has prepared for the audience one of the latest and most precious gifts’ selections in Artmark history.

The Winter Auction (December 17) represents an anniversary edition as Artmark is celebrating six years since the organization of the first art auction. Being a moment of summing up, an exhibition in renowned Artmark style is ready to amaze art lovers: works signed by the greatest Romanian artists rejoined in a memorable display.
