Romania’s Government has Okayed six application of financing for cinema productions worth almost RON 40 million (around EUR 8.5 million) within the state aid scheme meant to endorse the film industry. Among the applications filing for funds there are co-productions where famous actors like Gerard Butler, Steven Seagal and Nicolas Cage are starring, reads a press release by the National Prognosis Committee.

17 grant applications worth RON 110 million have been filed until December 3, 2018, with six being approved. Another 10 such grant applications that asked for state aid, worth RON 65.2 M are still in check.

Among the submitted applications are worth mentioning the projects where the international participation is significant as they have successful box-office actors starring, such as Gerard Butler, Keira Knightley, Olivia Munn, Jean Reno, Steven Seagal or  Nicolas Cage. These films are mainly co-productions in partnership with Romanian movie houses, which means that local capacities would be involved in creating cultural products that will go international,” the press release further says.

All productions will be in the credits with the indication „film made with the support of Romania’s Government”.

The initial budget of the state aid scheme had been RON 60 million, but it has been supplemented by the budget rectification in November.

The information that Keira Knightley, Gerard Butler and Liev Schreiber will come soon to film in Romania has been released in the Romanian mass media early this week.

Romanian cinema and TV production company Frame Film, in partnership with the British Midsummer Films, will start shooting two movies with Philip Noyce directing and actors Liev Schreiber, Gerard Butler or Keira Knightley starring.

One of the films is called „David Berman’s war” and tells the story of the American Secret Services’ intervention against the US mafia to support the Sicily-based mafia in the fight against Germans during WWII. The director is Australian Philip Noyce, who brought an Oscar nomination to Michael Caine in “The Quiet American” (2002).

Noyce boasts 50 movies, among which there is the awarded “Rabbit-Proof – Fence” starring Kenneth Brannagh, but also “The Giver” starring Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and Alexander Skarsgård.

Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan”, “Scream”, “X-men Origins – Wolverine”, “The Manciurian Candidate”) and Gerard Butler (“300”, “P.S. I love you”, “The Bounty Hunter”) are racing for the leading role.

The second British production expected for shootings in Romania is the moving story of  Florence Nightingale, who laid the foundations of the nurses’ school during the war in Crimea and who became the symbol of the nurses around the world.

British actress Kiera Knightley (“Pirates of the Carribean”, “Pride & Prejudice”, “Atonement”), nominated to Oscars and the Golden Globes, is in to get Florence’s role. It would be the second time Kiera Knightley is coming to Romania to shoot a movie, after almost two decades since the “Princess of Thieves”, produced by  Castel Film in 2001.
