Bizarre characters, parallel realities and post-apocalyptic landscapes conquer the-14th edition of the Bucharest International Animation Film Festival – Animest. For our Sci-Fi fans, the thematic section Yesterday Will Be Tomorrow will work as a genuine time machine, bringing on the big screen some of the most popular movies of this genre. Also, this journey through space and time will continue with the VR Experience section.

The gallery of contemporary art Kube Musette hosts the VR animation movies, most of them screened for the first time in Romania.

The fascinating journey through the imagination of the most important creators of Sci-Fi animations is carried out through four benchmark feature films that very few of the film buffs in Romania have had the chance to see them on the big screen. Over 20 short films about fantastic worlds and situations complete the menu specially prepared for the consumers of futuristic stories.

Matrix-phenomenon fans surely heard of the spectacular anime short films of the saga The Animatrix, also produced by the Wachowski duo. This anthology tells the story of the Matrix Universe origins, following up the war between men and machines. For those who barely discover this new version of the Matrix, it will be a genuine surprise to meet again with Neo, Trinity, and Kid, who borrow here the voices of the already well-known Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Clayton Watson.

If you ever imagined a world where people wouldn’t find themselves at the top of the food chain, then you’ll helplessly fall in love with La planète sauvage (Fantastic Planet), an animated masterpiece by René Laloux. Lovely as a poem, the 1973 Cannes award-winner film captures a humanity trapped in a universe populated by blue giants, outlining a deep spiritual and social metaphor.

After he was awarded the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, director Shane Acker, guest in the Animest jury in the past years, has turned 9 into a feature film that will keep you with bated breath. An extension of the original story, but with a totally different plot, the movie follows the protagonist (bearing the same name) in a post-apocalyptic universe, watching his struggle to survive, as the leader of a micro-community of survivors.

The absolute surprise of this section will certainly be Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, the well-known music animation that illustrates the second album Daft Punk. The story continues the scenario proposed in the videos “One More Time”, “Aerodynamic”, “Digital Love”, and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”, with the kidnapping and recovery of an interstellar pop band.
