No sooner had Jazz in the Park festival in Cluj ended than the torch has been passed to more jazz adventures in other locations in Romania, with two genre festivals in the pipeline this month.

Bucharest Jazz Festival

The 7th edition of the Bucharest Jazz Festival has just kicked off today, July 4, in George Enescu Square in Bucharest. As of Wednesday until Sunday this week, over 50 new names of the local and foreign jazz (including Grammy artists from Europe, North and South America or Asia) will tread the boards on the main stage of the festival.

Boasting two performances per night, the programme comprises loud jazz concerts, jazz sessions combined with improvise music, groove beats mixed with folk excerpts, hard bop hymns combined with R&B rhythms, Afro-Cuban jazz, chamber jazz and European folk music.

The performances start every day as of 8 p.m., except for Saturday, July 7, which is booked for the extraordinary concert performed by Jan Garbarek Group featuring Trilok Gurtu, scheduled starting 9 p.m.

Names performing: Bucharest Jazz Orchestra featuring Blue Noise, JazzyBIT and Alex Calancea Band, Mircea Tiberian and Teodora Enache, Claudio Puntin, Daniel Erdmann, Chris Dahlgren and Tilo Weber, Joca Perpignan, Apostolos Sideris, Manu Koch, Alex Arcuș and Călin Grigoriu.

The weekend July 6-8 is booked for the Scandinavian, New York and Afro-Cuban jazz, with Swedish Lars Danielsson, Norwegian Jan Garbarek and Indian Trilok Gurtu performing on July 7 and the American Jazzmeia Horn on July 8.

Bucharest Jazz Festival  is ending with an original piano and drums concert performed by Cuban Gonzalo Rubalcaba,  Grammy winner fourth times and Pedrito Martinez, famous for his collaboration with Paul Simon, Brice Springsteen and Sting.

Among other related events of the festival, ARCUB’s festival club is hosting conferences and workshops as well as night events such as the New Jazz Performers contest and live jam sessions until July 8.

Garana Jazz Festival

Garana Jazz Festival 22 will take place 12-15 July 2018 in Wolf’s Meadow, Garana, in Caras-Severin county, southwestern Romania. The organizers decided, once again, to meet the varied preference of jazz fans by putting together a line-up of Grammy winners and nominees, as well as winners of other prestigious European awards, alongside Romanian musicians with successful national and international projects.

Among the confirmed artists there are: Stanley Clarke Band (USA), Sly & Robbie with Nils Petter Molvær, Eivind Aarset, Vladislav Delay (Jamaica, Norway, Finland), Avishai Cohen’s Big Vicious (Israel), Indian Project Ekalavya (violinist Abhijith PS Nair and bass player Mohini Dey), Pink Freud (Poland), Elena Mîndru Finnection & Adam Bałdych , Romanian Mircea Tiberian (who will present the project La Classe operaia va in Paradiso alongside Claudio Puntin, Daniel Erdmann, Chris Dahlgren and Tilo Weber), or Moldavian ethno-jazz bands Trigon and Alex Calancea Band.

There will also be concerts by Benny Rietveld Trio feat. Marcel Moldovan, Timisoara Exit Oz musicians, Horea Crișovan and Teodor Pop.

The concerts will take place on the main stage of the festival in Wolf’s Meadow (in the evening, after 7pm) in the courtyard of the La Răscruce Inn (during the day, after 2 pm) and in the Catholic Church in Valiug village (from 11 am).

Jazz in the Park recently ended

Jazz in the Park Festival, which took take place in Cluj, between June 21st and July 1st 2018, enjoyed almost 100 concerts with names like Nouvelle Vague, Richard Bona, Afro-Cuban All-Stars, The Herbaliser, Bill Laurance Quartet, Fanfare Ciocârlia, Nik Bartsch’s Ronin, Forq and many others.
