The first Romanian-Czech dictionary of similar words will be launched at Carturesti Verona bookshop in Bucharest on March 31st.

The dictionary is signed by translators Petra Adámková and Jiřina Vyorálková, both working at the Czech Center in Bucharest.

The book’s goal is to present the words which have the same meaning in both Romanian and Czech languages, as well as the words with a different meaning which can be a fake friend for the Romanian language speakers. The dictionary adresses the large audience but also the experts interested in the Czech language and culture, representing a continuation of the „Czech Book” project initiated by Curtea Veche Publishing in 2013.

The dictionary is the first publication of this type at present. We are convinced it can help at overcoming the first obstacles appearing when the Romanian audience first meets a less known language such as the Czech one, for our vocabulary is generally comprising words form the Slavic space,” said František Zachoval, the director of the Czech Center in Bucharest.

However, the authors believe that there are many similar words in Romanian and Czech, as most of the Czech words with Slavic origins also entered the Romanian language through the influence of the Slavic languages from Romania’s neighbouring countries. „We selected almost 600 words from the current vocabulary. You fill find here Romanian words entered in the Czech language,” the authors stated.

The launch is due at Carturesti Verona bookshop on Thursday, March 31st, at 6 p.m.
