End of January at the Bucharest National Opera with a Double Performance: Mozart’s Don Giovanni

From January 27 to 31, 2025, the Bucharest National Opera has scheduled a double performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni (January 30-31). We invite you to join us and, like Don Giovanni, indulge in an exuberant life, lived wildly, at the capital’s premier lyrical stage, set to the rhythms of the brilliant Austrian composer.

Don Giovanni presented a dangerous subject in Vienna at the end of the 18th century. It’s no wonder that, upon reaching the imperial capital a few months after its Prague premiere, the opera was quickly censored. Mozart reportedly said: “I didn’t write this opera for the Viennese, but rather for the Prague audience; but most of all, I wrote it for myself and my friends.” Under the direction of the incomparable maestro Andrei Șerban, we are invited to reimagine – through a timeless lens that bridges generations of opera lovers – how composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte succeeded in sublimating, absolutely, the timeless belief that “Tutto e amore! Everything is love!” Controversial, if not dangerous, the subject remains so to this day, as Mozart lived intensely and composed Don Giovanni with feverish passion, speed, strength, irony, and, at the same time, a deep sense of human tragedy. The opera is titled dramma giocoso, and indeed the music often expresses joy, optimism, and serenity.
