The Famous Ballet “Cinderella” Choreographed by Renato Zanella Premieres on February 8 at the Bucharest National Opera
The Bucharest National Opera presents the ballet premiere of Cinderella by Sergei Prokofiev on February 8 at 6:30 PM, as part of the month dedicated to love. This timeless tale of the triumph of good, the power of true love, and the hope that can turn even the hardest trials into a happy ending will be brought to life through the direction and choreography of Renato Zanella. Maestro Daniel Jinga will conduct the orchestra.
For the premiere performance, the leading roles will be performed by principal dancers Cristina Dijmaru and Bogdan Cănilă, alongside the Ballet Ensemble and Orchestra of the Bucharest National Opera.
Prokofiev’s Cinderella, a performance for all ages, recreates the widely known story of Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, which has been adapted over time in various opera and ballet versions. One of the most famous ballets of all time, Cinderella is part of the repertoire of major ballet companies worldwide and enjoys great success with audiences.
We all know Cinderella’s story—a reflection of social disparities, highlighting the contrast between wealth and simplicity, privilege and the struggle for survival, while offering a lesson in hope and justice.
This new production of Cinderella on the Bucharest National Opera stage, choreographed by Renato Zanella, is the second in the theater’s history, following the 2002 production choreographed by Mihai Babușka, which was revived in 2014.
Renato Zanella, one of the most significant choreographers of his generation, served as Director of the Vienna State Opera Ballet from 1995 to 2005, creating approximately forty original choreographies during his tenure. Under his leadership, the Vienna Ballet Company became an independent ensemble, capable of performing principal roles with its own dancers and meeting the challenges set by the world’s greatest choreographers.
Zanella provided opportunities for young choreographers within the company to showcase their talent and placed great emphasis on training the next generation of dancers at the Vienna State Opera Ballet School, which he led from 2001 to 2005.
From 2016 to 2017, Renato Zanella was the artistic coordinator of the Bucharest National Opera Ballet, where he choreographed Romeo and Juliet—a production still part of the opera’s repertoire—and Endless Love (Opus 73) – Le Sacre du printemps, both of which have enjoyed sold-out performances over multiple seasons.
Upcoming performances are scheduled for February 9 and 12, March 19, and May 17.
Tickets are available at http://tickets.operanb.ro/ and at the Bucharest National Opera Box Office.
