Two characters who, beneath a harsh exterior, hide incredible vulnerability. A mother and her son. Two generations, two worlds, one shared universe. Their world is filled with love and tenderness, light and shadow, conflict and reconciliation, laughter and accusations, regrets, emotion, and bursts of laughter. Oana Pellea and Marius Manole star in a performance exploring themes like family bonds, emotional dependency, and manipulation.
“The Magpies”
-
May 19, 8:00 PM – Bucharest, National Theatre Bucharest, Ion Caramitru Hall
In a stellar cast featuring Maia Morgenstern, Carmen Tănase, Virginia Rogin, and Adriana Trandafir, The Magpies is one of the most important comedies in Romanian dramatic literature, written by Alexandru Kirițescu. The play presents a biting satire of the interwar bourgeoisie, unveiling the tensions, hypocrisy, and pettiness of a middle-class family plagued by trivial intrigues and selfish ambitions. The characters are vivid and sharply drawn—each carrying their own blend of cruelty or cunning, from the overbearing matriarch to the fragile and vulnerable wife.
“The Accusative Case”
-
May 20, 8:00 PM – Constanța, Casa de Cultură a Sindicatelor
Marina, once affected by a stroke, embarks on a journey with her daughter Lena to visit her brother and sister after the death of her husband. Her intolerance of injustice becomes a recurring theme in her detailed recollections of family events, recorded in a notebook she now feels compelled to reveal. After Marina’s death, Lena continues the journey, guided by her mother’s notes—an initiation into the past that gradually unveils the truth about the present and her relationship with her own husband. The script shifts fluidly from family drama to everyday comedy, carrying the audience through daily life with sharp humor.
