Australian Open: Begu/Niculescu pair advances to last sixteen doubles round

The pair made up by Romanian tennis players Irina Begu and Monica Niculescu has qualified in Melbourne on Friday to the last sixteen round of the Australian Open women’s doubles, after defeating Australians Jessica Moore/Ellen Perez 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Begu and Niculescu won after two hours and 8 minutes, coming from behind 4-5 in the final set.

Irina and Monica have secured a cheque of AUD 45,000 and 240 WTA points in the doubles rankings, and in the next round will play against the winners of last sixteen round

the match between Nadia Kicenok (Ukraine)/Anastasia Rodionova (Australia) vs. Kristyna Pliskova (Czech Republic)/ Dona Vekic (Croatia).

Also on Friday, Raluca Olaru and Ukrainian Olga Savchuk were defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Lucie Safarova / Barbora Strycova, 4th seeded. The Romanian-Ukrainian pair will receive AUD 22,500 and 130 WTA points. Safarova won the title in Melbourne in 2017, along with American Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Safarova/Strycova will play in the next round against winners between the Romanian-Brazilian pair Sorana Cîrstea/Beatriz Haddad Maia and Alicja Rosolska (Poland)/Abigail Spears (US).
