Australian Open: Begu/Niculescu reach doubles semi-finals
The Romanian pair Irina Begu/Monica Niculescu has qualified in Melbourne, on Tuesday, to the semi-finals of the women’s doubles at the Australian Open tennis tournament, after defeating Americans Jennifer Brady/Vania King 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Begu and Niculescu, 10th seeded, have won in two hours and 10 minutes.
The Romanian tennis players started the match well and led in the first set by 2-0 and 4-1, but then came a total fall, materialized in five consecutive games won by the opponents, which won the inaugural set 6-4.
In the second set, Begu and Niculescu also had the initiative, they led 2-0 and 3-1, Brady and King came close to 3-2, but the Romanian pair won the set 6-2.
Irina and Monica did not give a chance to the opponents in the final set, winning 6-0 in 27 minutes.
For Irina Begu is the first Grand Slam semi-final, while Monica Niculescu played last year the doubles final at Wimbledon.
Irina Begu and Monica Niculescu have secured a cheque worth AUD 185,000 and 780 WTA points in the doubles.
In the penultimate act, Begu and Niculescu will face the pair Ekaterina Makarova /Elena Vesnina (Russia, 2nd seeded), champions in Melbourne in 2014.
