Australian Open: Irina Begu through to second round, Cirstea and Niculescu – out
Romanian tennis player Irina Begu has qualified on Monday to the second round of Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, as her oponent anandoned in the second set.
Irina Begu, 70th WTA, benefits from the abandon of Andreea Petkovici, 63rd WTA, after losing the first set 6-7 (3) and leading 4-3 in the second one.
Begu led 4-0 in the first set, but Petkovici turned the game around to take the lead 5-4. Begu saved three set points but lost the tie-break 7-3.
The Romanian tennis player has also taken the lead in the second set, but Petkovici again came from behind to level 2-2. At the score 4-3 for Begu, the German player slipped and needed a long medicial intervention, being forced to abandon.
Monday morning, Sorana Cirstea, 84th WTA, was defeated by Rebecca Peterson, 64th WTA, 6-4, 6-1 and Monica Niculescu, 99th WTA, by Amanda Anisimova, 87th WTA, US, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
