Australian Open: Niculescu/Begu, Raluca Olaru/Olga Savchuk through to the doubles second round. Irina Begu defeated

In the doubles event, the Romanian pair Monica Niculescu/Irina Begu, 10th seeded, has qualified on Wednesday to the second round of Australian Open, after defeating Mirjana Lucici-Baroni/Andrea Petkovic (Croatia/Germany) 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-2. In the next round the pair will face Jessica Moore/Ellen Perez (Australia).

Earlier in the day, the pair made up of Romanian tennis player Raluca Olaru and Ukrainian Olga Savchuk have qualified in Melbourne, on Wednesday, to the second round of the Australian Open doubles event, after defeating Katerina Kozlova (Ukraine)/Yulia Putineva (Kazakhstan) 6-3, 6-3.

Olaru and Savchuk, who last year were defeated in Melbourne in the second round, have won in one hour and 23 minutes, although they made seven double faults.

The pair will have a very difficult mission in the next round, as they face Lucie Safarova/Barbora Strycova, 4th seeded.

The qualified pairs have secured cheques of AUD 22,500 and 130 WTA points.

In another doubles match, Mihaela Buzărnescu and Argentinean Maria Irigoyen were defeated by Su-wei Hsieh (Taiwan)/Shuai Peng (China), 8th seeded, 6-3, 7-5. The Romanian-Argentine pair will be rewarded for participation with AUD 14,000 and 10 WTA points.

Romanian tennis player Florin Mergea and his Serbian pair Nenad Zimonjic were defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Spaniards Feliciano Lopez/Marc Lopez on Wednesday.

In women’s singles, Romanian tennis player Irina Camelia Begu was defeated by Croatian Petra Martic 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the second round.
