Australian Open: Sorana Corstea, defeated by Garbine Muguruza in the last sixteen round. Tecau, Mergea – out!
Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea (26, 78th WTA) was defeated by Spanish Roland Garros winner Garbine Muguruza (7th seeded) Sunday 6-2, 6-3 at the Australian Open at Margaret Court Arena.
Muguruza, the 2016 Roland Garros champion, advances to the final eight at Melbourne Park for the first time, where she’ll play the winner of Sunday’s match between defending women’s champion Angelique Kerber and Coco Vandeweghe.
In the doubles event, both pairs with Romanian players were eliminated.
Horia Tecau and Jean Julien Roger (11th seeded) were defeated by marc Polmans/Andrew Whittington (Australia) 7-6 (7/7), 7-6 (7/5).
Florin Mergea and Dominic Inglot (16th seeded) were also eliminated in the same round 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 by main favourites Nicholas Mahut/Pierre Hurues Hubert (France) in two hours and two minutes.
The two defeated pairs will each collect 180 ATP points and AUD 40,000.
