BRD Bucharest Open: Irina Begu wins singles, doubles 2017 trophies

Romanian tennis player Irina Begu (7th seeded) has defeated on Sunday Julia Goerges (Germany, 45th WTA) 6-3, 7-5 in the BRD Bucharest Open 2017 women’s singles final to become the second Romanian to lift the trophy after Simona Halep’s victories in 2014 and 2016.

It is the fourth tournament won by Irina Begu, 26, after the ones in Tashkent (2012), Seoul (2015) and Florianopolis (2016).

Following this win, Begu will receive 280 WTA points and USD 43,000.

In previous matches, Begu and Georges had a balanced fight, 1-1, both encounters on hard-court.

Following this victory, begu will climb from 58th WTA position to top 40.

BRD Bucharest Open tournament offers prizes amounting to USD 226,750.

In the semi-finals, Irina Begu defeated Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro (2nd seeded) 7-5, 7-5. Begu.

In the quarter-finals Irina Begu defeated Pauline Parmentier (France, 107th WTA) 7-5, 6-0. The match lasted one hour and 23 minutes.

In the doubles final, Irina Begu and Irina Olaru defeated Elise Martens (Belgium)/Demi Schuurs (Netherlands) 6-3, 6-3.

Begu has thus become the first Romanian tennis player to win the singles and doubles trophy of a tournament since Virgina Ruzici in 1985.
