Thousands gathered to acclaim US Open champion Bianca Andreescu in her home town, Mississauga, a small town near Toronto in Canada.
People have waved Canadian, but also Romanian flags. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has also attended the celebrations, thanking Bianca’s parents, Romanian-born Nicu and Maria Andreescu for immigrating to Canada.
The city mayor, Bonnie Crombie, has offered Bianca the key to the city and introduced the signpost marking the street that will have Bianca’s name.
“Thank you to the thousands of fans from across the GTA who came out tonight to cheer on Canada’s champion. We are so proud of you Bianca,” said the mayor on Twitter.
At the same time, the mayor announced that “Bianca Andreescu Day” is celebrated in town on September 16.
In her turn, Bianca thanked to her family and fans, reiterating that hard works is behind her performance.
