Latest news: Gymnast Ana Maria Bărbosu will receive the bronze medal won in the floor final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Friday, at 9:30 a.m., in an event organized at the Olympic House in Bucharest. “The medal will be handed to him by Octavian Morariu, member of the International Olympic Committee for Romania, and by Mihai Covaliu, president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee in an event that will take place on the esplanade of the Olympic House in Bucharest, Friday August 16, starting from 09.30″, the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) announced on Facebook on Tuesday.
The Romanian Gymnastics Federation announces that the Court of Sports Arbitration (CAS) rejected the request made by the United States Gymnastics Federation, Jordan Chiles, and the United States Olympic Committee to reopen the case of the floor competition at the Olympic Games.
“The Romanian Gymnastics Federation wishes to announce that CAS, through an official communication sent a few minutes ago, rejected the request made by the United States Gymnastics Federation, Jordan Chiles, and the United States Olympic Committee to reopen the case. CAS emphasized that during the proceedings “it was conclusively established through the official records provided by the International Gymnastics Federation, uncontested by any party during the proceedings” that the appeal submitted by Ms. Landi was transmitted late, after the 1-minute limit”, says FRG.
The International Gymnastics Federation confirmed, on Saturday evening, that Ana Maria Bărbosu receives the bronze medal in the floor competition at the Olympic Games, as a result of the decision of the Ad Hoc Division of CAS.
CAS only accepted the appeal of gymnast Ana Maria Bărbosu, not Sabrina Voinea.
The ranking of the first 5 places became the following, as a result of Saturday’s decision: 1. Rebeca Andrade (Brazil) – score 14,166, 2. Simone Biles (USA) – 14,133, 3. Ana Maria Bărbosu (Romania) – 13,700, 4. Sabrina Voinea (Romania) – 13,700 and 5. Jordan Chiles (USA) – 13,666 (score before the appeal accepted by the referees).
The American Gymnastics Federation submitted video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Sunday that, in its opinion, proves that Jordan Chiles should keep the bronze medal in gymnastics, in the floor event, at the Paris Olympics.
The additional evidence was presented by USA Gymnastics a day after CAS ruled in favor of an appeal by Ana Bărbosu, to whom the bronze medal thus belongs. Chiles was asked to return the medal.
Bărbosu and his team appealed to CAS, arguing that an appeal filed by Chiles’ coach, Cecile Landi, regarding the results of the event was made after the one-minute time limit and that the American should not be awarded the score of 13.766 that propelled in third place.
But USA Gymnastics said it provided CAS with video footage that was not available to the governing body before the tribunal’s decision.
Moreover, the USA Gymnastics pledges to not renounce. In a statement on CAS notice, USA Gymnastics says it was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented. “We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan,” USA Gymnastic say.
