Sporting Lisbon and FCSB finished the match Tuesday evening in a draw, 0-0, in the first round of the Champions League play-off. Romanian Vice-champions thus have a good result in view of the return match in Bucharest on August 23.

FCSB missed several important players such as Constantin Budescu, Mihai Balasa (both injured), Romario Benzar, Dragos Nedelcu. As Mihai Pintilii was sent off in the 80th minute, when he received a red card, he will not play the return match.

The hosts dominated the match and had several opportunities, whereas FCSB had its chances to score, but most of the game was defensive.

Nicolae Dică, FCSB coach, said after the match: “I am satisfied because it is a good result – though we are not through yet, nor are we the favourite to qualify, as unfortunately we did not convert any of the goal opportunities tonight. Our chances of qualification remain slim – but the players showed the proper attitude and commitment. If we play in the same way, our chances will increase”.
