Cycling: Edwin Avila wins the first stage of the Sibiu Tour, Eduard Grosu – second placed

Edwin Avila, member of Team Illuminate (US), has won the first stage of the Sibiu Cycling Tour on Thursday after a solitary sprint in 5hours, 1 minute and 58 seconds.

The first stage, scheduled on Thursday, took place on the Sibiu-Blaj-Miercurea Sibiului-Sibiu route, 211.8 km long.

Eduard Grosu, member of Romania’s national team, won the platoon sprint, arriving 44 seconds later, while the podium was completed by Italian Simone Ponzi (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), in the same time as Grosu.

Italian Andrea Palini (Androni Sidermec Botecchia), winner of the prologue on Wednesday night, arrived sixth.

The 114 cyclists in the race face a total route of 734 km, of which 101.8 km will be climbing, with 14 C-type peaks, one B-class, three A-type peaks and one special category .

The prizes awarded by the Sibiu Cycling Tour amount to over EUR 27,000, plus the over 740 UCI points.
