Hagi and Popescu, among Turkey’s best foreign imports

22

UEFA.com recalls Turkey’s ten most successful foreign imports. On the first place ranks former Romanian football player Gheorghe Hagi and on the third place is placed Gheorghe Popescu.
Gheorghe Hagi (Romania – Galatasaray, 1996–2001)
The playmaker switched from Barcelona and was integral in bringing success to Galatasaray, and Turkey, during the five seasons he spent in Istanbul. Blessed with superb technique and known for his set-piece prowess, Hagi won four league titles, a UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup with Cimbom.
Gheorghe Popescu (Romania – Galatasaray, 1997–2001)
Like his compatriot Hagi, Popescu was in the Galatasaray side that defeated Arsenal on penalties in the 2000 UEFA Cup final – Turkey’s first UEFA club competition triumph. The one-time Barcelona captain formed a solid partnership with Bülent Korkmaz at the heart of the defence, uefa.com informs.
