All components of the Romanian kayak canoe lot, including those qualified to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, have been tested positive with Meldonium, TVR and Digi 24 inform.
On the list of doped athletes in canoeing there are not only the eight athletes qualified to Rio, but all components of the male and female lots, TVR informs, which states that athlete Daniela Stanciu was also tested positive with the same substance.
“Besides the two tested previously, there are seven other athletes qualified for Rio of the canoeing lot who tested positive with Meldonium. It is a tragedy for sports and bad news. We will launch an investigation, because we think there are people in the athletes’ entourage who provide this drug,” Romanian Sports Olympic Committee (COSR) general secretary Ion Dobrescu said.
“We call on the public and on the federation and the clubs, as most of the athletes are with Steaua and Dinamo clubs, to do their own investigation to find out who allowed these developments,” Ion Dobrescu said, according to Digi 24.
It is the biggest doping scandal to ever hit the Romanian sports.
Leonid Carp (kayak singles and kayak double), Andrei Stefan Strat (canoe double), Elena Meroniac (kayak doubles) and the canoe 4 crew made up of Traian Neagu Catalin Turceag, Daniel Burciu and Petrus Gavrila – are the athletes who have failed the anti-doping tests. They all had obtained qualifications at the 2016 Olympics, but lose them consequently.
Other doped Romanian athletes in recent history: Mirela Lavric (athletics), Michael Donisan (athletics), Claudia Stef (athletics), Éva Tófalvi (Biathlon) and, as of Thursday, boxer Lucian Bute, former world champion in the WBC version at the super middleweight category.
