Indian Wells: Irina Begu, qualifies to second round. Simona Halep has recovered after injury

Romanian tennis player, Irina Camelia Begu, 36^th WTA, has qualified on Wednesday to the second round at Indial Wells, after defeating Alexandra Krunic, 47^th WTA, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

In the next round, Begu will face Karolina Pliskova, 5^th WTA, 5^th seeded.

Begu will play also in the doubles, in pair with Simona Halep. In the first round they will face Nicole Melichar (US)/ Kveta Peschke (Czech Republic). The pair won the doubles event in Szenzhen this year.

In the singles, Halep will play against Kristyna Pliskova, 77^th WTA, in the second round of the tournament.

On Wednesday, Simona Halep, 1^st WTA, said she has recovered after the injury at Australian Open.

“I have recovered after Australian Open. It’s been difficult, after I lose a final, and this final was special, as the one at Roland Garros. It is important that I reached these finals,” Halep said.

Referring to the fact that no tennis player dominates the tournaments, she said: “All the girls in top 10 are very good, the level is tight, every tournament is open, I believe it is more interesting and more fun. About the frequent change of the WTA leader, I can’t say it was boring when Serena won all the time, as she is a great champion, but now it is different and more interesting,” Simona Halep said.

About the long break due to the injury, she said: “I was angry, because I did not feel the balls, by my coach (Darren Cahill) told me I had a three-week break and it’s natural to have less inspired moments. I am trying to improve my game, to prepare the next match and to win trophies.”
