Romanian athletes Andreea Chitu (photo) and Corina Caprioriu climbed the podium of the Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) International Judo Federation Grand Slam on Friday, Agerpres informs. Andreea Chitu, the world vice champion of the 52 kg category this year in Chelyabinsk and winner of the Tashkent Grand Prix, lost the final to Kosovar Majlinda Kelmendi by a waza ari (half point) and settled for the second place.
Corina Caprioriu, Olympic vice champion of the 57 kg category in London and gold medallist in the Tashkent Grand Prix this year, ended third in Abu Dhabi owing to a victory by ippon (whole point) against Canadian Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard in the bout for the bronze medal.
At 48 kg category, Monica Ungureanu was eliminated in the second round of Group A, while Violeta Dumitru lost in the last round of group C, and entered into retraining. In the first match of this phase, Dumitru defeated Chinese Jiang Yahong and in the match for bronze was defeated by North Korean Sol Mi Kim.
On the scale of importance, Judo grand slams are the next tier down below continental championships, meaning a large number of ranking points towards the 2016 Olympics.
Abu Dhabi hosts its first International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Slam event this week after successfully staging Grand Prix tournaments for the past five years.
