Miami Open: Sorana Cîrstea stuns Monica Puig, Patricia Tig also qualifies to second round

Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea registered an important victory 6-2, 6-4 against Olympic champion Monica Puig (Puerto Rico) on Wednesday, in the opening round of the WTA tournament in Miami (Florida), with total prizes of USD 6,993,450.

Cirstea (26, 65th WTA) needed one hour and nine minutes to win against Puig (40th WTA). Sorana had defeated Puig also in 2011 in the third round at Indian Wells 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

She secured a cheque for USD 22,325 and 35 WTA points and will play Latvian Anastasija Sevastova in the second round (25, 26th WTA), 19th seeded.

Patricia Tig registered another remarkable victory on Wednesday, player coming from the qualifying rounds, who defeated British tennis player Heather Watson 7-6 (4), 6-1. In the second round, Tig will meet Kristina Mladenovic (France), 22nd seeded.
