German Cristoph Daum is not longer the coach of the national football team after the contract with the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) had been rescinded.
The name of the new national team coach is to be revealed in the upcoming days. Dan Petrescu has denied the job, while Dinamo’s coach Cosmin Contra remains the hot favourite.
“Following the recommendation of the Romanian Football Federation’s Technical Committee, president Razvan Burleanu and coach Cristoph Daum agreed to end the collaboration before the last two matches from the World Cup 2018 preliminaries, with Kazakhstan and Denmark,” reads a press release on the FRF website.
“We thank Christoph Daum for collaboration! His experience was extremely valuable. He enforced high standards, which unfortunately have’t been enough to bring Romanian supporters the joy of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia,” the release also says.
In retort, Daum says he was surprised by the decision. “I was a little bit surprised and disappointed at the same time when I heard the news from the Technical Committee. Two months ago they used to tell me I am doing a fantastic job and that they want me to continue until 2020, and now they turned rightabout. I don’t understand!” Daum stated.
Having Daum at the helm, the national team has accumulated 9 points in 8 matches of the qualifying group for World Cup 2018 in Russia and has no chances to qualify.
Later, Christoph Daum says he is the one who wanted to terminate the job as Romania’s national team coach.
“I’ve just signed the termination of the contract. I wanted to conclude the adventure now,” Daum has told Spiegel online.
He said the main problem faced in Romania is the pressure coming from the big football clubs to call the players to the national team. “The pressure is high, mainly coming from the clubs, they want to see their players in the national team in order to sell them more expensively. I have never go involved in such things, I am an independent,” Daum said.
Dan Petrescu was Burleanu’s main option, but the coach preferred to continue its job at CFR Cluj. The second on the list was Cosmin Contra, the Dinamo coach, who seemed willing to immediately take over the national football team.
Former national team coaches, Walter Zenga and Mircea Rednic are the other options.
