With an 80% surge in spending across the ‘big 5 leagues’ during the January 2024 transfer window, players will be eager to showcase their worth on the field for their new teams. However, it’s equally crucial for them to recognise the impact of off-pitch factors that can enhance the club’s overall success.

Curious to investigate the financial health of major clubs following transfer deadline day, Ticketgum analysed how merch sales could offset transfer costs of newly acquired stars. They achieved this by analysing factors like player acquisition costs, average shirt prices, and the quantity of shirts required to offset a player’s fees.

Radu Drăgușin, originally from Romania, has moved from the Italian club Genoa to Tottenham Hotspur in a significant market deal worth €29,250,000. Considering his Italian football roots, it’s intriguing to note that approximately 2,439,024 shirts at a price of €120 each would need to be sold to recoup the price of his transfer.

Adam Wharton is the player that will need to make the most shirt sales to recoup the transfer fee of €21,645,000. Despite beating off competition from Tottenham Hotspur to sign Wharton, Crystal Palace will have a daunting task trying to sell 2,846,154 shirts to offset his hefty €21,645,000 transfer fee.

In second place is Renan Lodi, recently acquired by Saudi club Al-Hilal for an impressive €23,166,000 despite interest from Brentford during the transfer window. To offset his transfer fee, the defender would have to sell 2,607,665 shirts, each priced at €89

French defender Sacha Boey secures third place, facing the task of selling 2,460,592 shirts for Bayern Munich to balance his €29,952,000 transfer fee. With Arsenal eyeing third place in the league, Boey’s demand surged during the transfer window. Priced at €122 per shirt, Bayern Munich faces a formidable challenge in offsetting the transfer expenses.

On the other hand, in last place is Adrian Mazilu who would need just 416,667 shirt sales to cover his low transfer fee of €2,925,000.
