- Fencing – Romania’s women’s epee team has won the gold medals in Rio after defeating China in the final 44-38. The team included Ana Maria Popescu (Branza), Simona Gherman, Simona Pop and Loredana Dinu. This is the first medal for Romania in Rio. It is the fourth Olympic medal for Romanian fencers in the history of the competition. Popescu brought advantage in the first round against Xu Anqi (5-4). Simona Gherman increased the lead to 9-6 against Sun Yiwen. Then the Chinese team closed the gap to 10-9 during the encounter between Simona Pop and Sun Yujie, but afterwards the score was always favourable to Romania: 21-14, 24-16, 30-25 and finally 44-38. In the semi-finals Romania defeated Russia 45-31 and in the quarter-finals the US 24-23.
- Tennis – Florin Mergea/Horia Tecau reached the final on Thursday in the doubles event after defeating Steve Johnson/Jack Sock (US) 6-3, 7-5 in the semi-finals. In the final the Romanian pair will face the Spanish pair Marc Lopez/Rafael Nadal. In the mixed doubles Irina Begu/Horia Tecau defeated Agnieszka Radwanska/Lukasz Kubot 4-6, 7-6 (1), 10-8 to reach the next round. In the quarter-finals on Friday the Romanian pair will face Lucie Hradecka/Radek Stepanek (Czech Republic). The pair Monica Niculescu/Florin Mergea withdrew from the competition due to Niculescu’s medical problems.
- Rowing – Ionela Lehaci/Gianina Beleagă through to the final B of women’s lightweight double sculls. Laura Oprea/Mădălina Beres in the final B of double sculls. Cristi Pîrghie/George Palamariu failed to qualify. The 8+1 team is through to the final.
- Swimming – Norbert Trandafir has failed to reach the final in the 50m freestyle event.

President Iohannis congratulates the women’s epee team
President Klaus Iohannis congratulates Romania’s women’s epee team on their gold medal at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games fencing competitions, saying in a Facebook post that they have made an entire country proud.
“Congrats to our women’s epee team, which last night won the gold at Rio 2016! Thanks to their talent, strength of character and after thousands of hours of training, Simona Gherman, Ana Maria Popescu, Simona Pop and Loredana Dinu managed to propel Romania to the first place of the Olympic podium, making an entire country proud of their performance,” reads Iohannis’s message.
