Monday was another disappointing day for Romanian athletes competing in Rio.

  • Gymnastics – Romanian gymnast Catalina Ponor was ranked 7th in the beam final. Ponor, three time Olympic champion in Athens in 2004, had a hesitating performance and only scored 14.000. Ponor won Romania’s most recent Olympic medal in the beam event, in Athens (gold). In the Olympic Games of 2012, she was ranked 4th in the beam event, with the same score as the bronze medallist, US Aly Raisman. Catalina Ponor will turn 29 on August 20. The gold medal went to Dutch Sanne Wevers, with 15.466 points.  The UK Ambassador to Romania, Paul Brummell congratulated Ponor despite her ranking. “Commiserations to Catalina Ponor, a true Olympian despite the disappointments at Rio 2016”, the British ambassador twitted.
  • Marian Dragulescu was ranked 4th in the vault competition with 15.266 points and 15.633, on average 15.499, with the same points as Kenzo Shirai (Japan) who had a higher difficulty level. Gold went to Ri Se Gwang (P.R. Korea) with 15.691 points. It is the first time in 44 years that Romania does not win a medal in gymnastics at the Olympic Games.
  • Athletics – Marian Oprea failed all three attempts in triple jump, leaving the competition.
