Rio Olympics: Romanian athletes results on day 3

  • Tennis – Romanian pair Florin Mergea/Horia Tecau has qualified to the quarter-finals of the doubles event after defeating Santiago Gonzalez/Miguel Angel Reyes (Mexico) 6-3, 7-6 (9). In the women’s singles event, Monica Niculescu has withdrawn from the competition due to back pains.
  • Table tennis – Adrian Crisan was defeated in the last sixteen round by Zhang Jike (China) 4-0 (11-8, 11-9, 14-12, 11-5). In women’ singles competition Daniela Dodean Monteiro was defeated by Ai Fukuhara (Japan) 4-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-4, 11-1).
  • Shooting – Athlete Alin Moldoveanu (Olympic champion in London in the10 meters air rifle) was eliminated in the first round.
  • Rowing – Laura Oprea/Lavinia Tarlea failed to qualify in the double sculls women’s competition, will compete in retraining. So will Ionela Lehaci/Geanina Beleaga in the lightweight double sculls. Constantin Adam, Marius Cozmiuc, Toader Gonţaru, Vlad Aicoboae, in the quadruple sculls without coxswain men event, will compete in retraining.
  • Judo – Corina Caprioriu, 57 kg category, was defeated by yuko in the fight for the bronze medal by Telma Monteiro (Portugal). She stands fifth in the competition.
  • Swimming – Robert Glinta was placed 8th in the backstroke 100m final in 53” 50/100. The event was won by Ryan Myrphy (US) in 51” 97/100.
  • Women’s handball – Romania was defeated on Monday in Group A by hosts Brazil 26-13 (11-9) in a poor game played by the Romanians, the second defeat after the one against Angola. Group A standings: 1. Brazil – 4 points; 2. Angola 2; 3. Spain 2; 4. Norway 2; 5. Montenegro 0; 6. Romania 0. Romania’s next match is on August 10, 17.30h Bucharest time, against Montenegro.
