Roland Garros: Sorana Cirstea, Simona Halep cruise to second round
Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea (64th WTA) has defeated on Tuesday Shuai Peng (China, 36th WTA) 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament in Paris.
Although having the second chance, Cirstea played well against the Chinese opponent and was aggressive in returns, while the forehand has worked precisely.
In the second round, Cirstea will face Carla Suarez Navarro (Spain, 21st seeded), who defeated in the first round Maria Sakkari (Greece) 6-4, 6-2.
In direct matches, Cirstea leads Navarro 4-1. The last match was played at Australian Open 2017, in the second round, and the Romanian tennis player won 7-6, 6-3.
For her performance so far, Sorana Cirstea will collect 70 WTA points and a cheque for EUR 60,000.
Romania’s Simona Halep, 4th WTA, advanced on Tuesday to the second round after defeating Slovakia’s Jana Cepelova 6-2 6-3 in 67 minutes.
Cepelova, 24, WTA’s 88th, had defeated Halep in the first round of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Halep, 25, had won their first head-to-head meet, in the second round of the US Open 2014 tournament 6-2, 6-1.
Her next opponent is Germany’s Tatjana Maria, 29, 104th WTA.
