Rome tournament: Mergea/ Bopanna and Begu/Niculescu through to the doubles semi-finals
Romanian tennis player Florin Mergea and Indian Rohan Bopanna have qualified on Friday to the doubles semi-final in Rome, by defeating 6-3, 6-4 Philipp Kohlschreiber (Germany)/Viktor Troicki (Serbia).
It is the second consecutive semi-final for the Romanian-Indian pairing, seeded 6th in Rome, after the last weekend in Madrid. Their next opponents are 8th seeded Vasek Pospisil (Canada)/Jack Sock (US), whom they already met and defeated once, in the 2014 Shanghai Masters tournament (2-6, 6-3, 11-9).
Last year in Rome, Mergea and Bopanna bowed out in the last sixteen round versus Romanian Horia Tecau and Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer.
In the women’s tournament Irina Begu/Monica Niculescu have defeated 3rd favourites Timea Babos (Hungary)/Iaroslava Shvedova (Kazakhstan) 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
In the next round the Romanian pair will face no. 1 favourites Martina Hingis (Switzerland)/Sania Mirza (India).
