Czech player Katerina Siniakova sprung the first major surprise of this year’s Shenzhen Open on Wednesday by knocking out former champion Romanian tennis player Simona Halep.

Last year was one of steady progress for Siniakova, and she signalled her intent to continue this rise with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory over the World No.4, wtatennis.com informs.

Siniakova’s only previous Top 20 victory came against Andrea Petkovic in 2015, but she held her nerve during a tense finale, adding a more significant victim to her ledger when Halep’s forehand found the net.

In the first round Simona Halep (4th WTA) defeated Jelena Jankovic (54th WTA) 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

In the doubles event, the Romanian pair Simona Halep/ Monica Niculescu was eliminated on Tuesday by Russians Natela Dzalamidze/ Veronika Kudermetova 3-6, 3-6 in the first round of the competition.
