Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has defeated Karolina Pliskova after three sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday in the Fed Cup competition. Halep has beaten Pliskova for the seventh time in her career.
Simona Halep outranked Karolina Pliskova in a two hour-and-37 minute game to put Romania one match win away from ousting the defending champion, Czech Republic.
After the match, Halep said this is her most important victory in the Fed Cup.
“With her victory on Pliskova’s home soil, Halep avenged a three-set Fed Cup loss to the Czech Republic in Romania in 2016,” says WTA.
As for Romanian No.2 Mihaela Buzarnescu, she lost to Katerina Siniakova, in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Later on Sunday though, Romania managed to qualify for the Fed Cup World Group semi-finals after defeating Czechi Republic, the holder of the trophy, 3-2 in Ostrava.
Irina Begu/Monica Niculescu defeated the Czech pair Barbora Krejcikova/Katerina Siniakova, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4 in an epic match.
“Although Siniakova and Krejcikova took the first set, the Romanian pair recovered from losing the opening set to win 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-4 in a match that lasted just under three hours. A nervy third set saw three breaks of serve in a row at the start leaving the Romanian pair 3-1 up.
Siniakova and Krejcikova broke back to make it 4-4 and the momentum seemed to be with them before Begu and Niculescu held their nerve for a famous win,” BBC reports.
After Begu-Niculescu’s victory, Simona Halep delivered a beautiful, inspiring speech, stating that it is a huge performance for our country and that children who start playing tennis can have some role models in them.
“It was a very tensed match, it was even harder in the stands. I was very nervous. Monica asked me before if I want to get in court, but I told her she is better. We all made a huge effort for this game. We played against a big champion, Czech Republic. the girls are extraordinary, they left their heart on the court, so they managed to win. As I said before, this year I am giving all for the Fed Cup team. It is a huge step for us, for our country. The little ones who start playing tennis can trust us. This Fed Cup means something“, Simona Halep told Telekom Sport.
As for Irina Begu and Monica Niculescu, they were overwhelmed, they thanked the public and the Romanian fans, and particularly Simona Halep. “It was all possible due to Simona (…) We could not have lost with such supporters”, Begu said.
“To have so many people coming for us…I was afraid I would not be able to help Irina, but the audience <kept> me there“, Niculescu stated in her turn.
