Romanian tennis champion Simona Halep is proposed to be Romania’s flag bearer at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, the President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR), Mihai Covaliu has announced today. However, the COSR Executive Committee is to have the final call on this.
“Simona Halep is dubbed as one of the Romanian most iconic athletes. She will be recommended as the flag bearer for Romania in Tokyo, and the Executive Committee of COSR is going to validate this proposal,” said the COSR president.
Rowing athletes could be the most numerous delegation to represent Romania at the upcoming Summer Olympics if the men’s eight and women’s eight crews qualify.
There are seven crews qualified so far and if the two eight crews are added, the rowing team will be the largest on team Romania to compete in Tokyo and thus, most likely to win medals, as Covaliu said.
Mihai Covaliu won a gold medal in the individual sabre event at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
