Simona Halep announced on Tuesday that it was her last match in Cluj, where she was eliminated in the first round of the Transylvania Open. “To be competitive, it takes a lot more and right now it’s not possible,” Halep added.

Halep was defeated by Italian Lucia Bronzetti, ranked 72nd in the world, 6-1, 6-1, in 59 minutes of play.

“It’s a bit hard to speak. I want to thank you, this court is my home. In Romania I feel best here, thank you. There were matches that I won, but also matches that I lost, and your energy always filled my soul. I felt best here, it’s a special emotion, thank you. I have many friends who came to see me today, the team, from a sporting point of view I am a fulfilled person, what I have achieved in tennis, I never dreamed of, but I worked for it. My father, mother, brother have always been by my side, without them I could not achieve anything. I want to tell them that I love them and thank them. It was my last match in Cluj. Who knows if I will come back, I don’t want to cry. I hope to see you again as many times as possible. To be competitive requires much more and at this moment it is no longer possible. I wish the children a lot of ambition, to reach the top, it is tiring, exhausting, but it is beautiful. Children, trust in yourselves, fight, work, because it is worth it”, Halep declared on the court, after the match with Lucia Bronzetti.

After the statement on the court, the former WTA leader also held a press conference. “I am at peace, I know that I did nothing wrong with tennis. I just want to rest, I am a professional tennis player who is emotionally exhausted. I want to let life surprise me. I do not know what will happen in life, but it is a “Goodbye” from tennis, here in Cluj, at home. I understood that it was the right decision, that if you do not train every day, you cannot cope. I have no regrets, we are looking ahead, maybe that is how it was meant to be”, Halep told the press conference in Cluj.

“What I have achieved in tennis I never dreamed of. My family has always been by my side. Without them I would not be who I am today. I make this decision with a peaceful soul and I have always been realistic with myself. My body can’t take that much anymore,” said Simona Halep added.

Simona Halep, ranked 870th in the WTA rankings and the recipient of a wild card, was eliminated on Tuesday in the first round of the Transylvania Open, the tournament in Cluj-Napoca with a prize pool of $275,094.
