Table tennis, European Championships: Adina Diaconu wins U21 singles gold medal

Romanian table tennis player Adina Diaconu has won the singles gold medal at the European Under-21 table tennis championship in Gondomar (Portugal) on Sunday, after defeating in the final Maria Malanina (Russia) 4-0 ( 13-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7).

In the semifinal, Diaconu defeated Belarusian Nadejda Bogdanova 4-0 (11-7, 11-3, 11-3, 11-8).

Romania also won two bronze medals by Tania Plăian and Rareş Şipoş.

Plian was defeated in the semifinals by Malanina 4-1 (11-9, 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-5), and Şipos was defeated in the same round act by Ioannis Sgouropoulos (Greece) 4-3 (7-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4, 13-15, 10-12, 11-9).

In 2017, at the first edition of the competition, in Sochi, Adina Diaconu and Andreea Dragoman won the only medal for Romania, silver in the women’s doubles.

In 2018, in Minsk, Romania won a silver medal – Cristian Pletea, and two bronze – Rareş Şipoş and the men’s doubles  Diaconu/Dragoman.
