Romanian tennis player Simona Halep (2nd WTA, 1st seeded) advanced on Wednesday to the semi-finals of the Apia International Sydney tournament in Sydney, defeating 6-4, 7-5 Czech Karolina Pliskova, 5th seeded, in one hour and 38 minutes.
The qualification comes with 185 WTA points and USD 36,600 in prize money.
Halep will face Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova (30 years old, 25th WTA) in the semi-finals, who has defeated Italian Sara Errani 7-6, 6-0. Halep leads Kuznetsova in their head-to-head series, 3-2. They’re tied 1-1 on hardcourts.
Halep had beaten Pliskova in tight two-setters in their only two previous meetings, and this one went much the same way. Halep jumped out to leads in both sets but watched on as Pliskova caught up – 5-1 became 5-4 in the first set, 4-2 became 4-all in the second – but the Romanian closed fast every time, informs.
Halep finished with more winners than Pliskova, 22 to 21, and far fewer errors, 33 to 43.
On Tuesday Halep defeated Caroline Garcia (France) 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 to qualify to the quarter-finals.
The tournament in Sydney grants total awards amounting to USD 687,900.
