Across the world, casinos are becoming more and more popular, and none more so than in Romania. The industry is booming, with gaming studios such as Amber earning record revenue, while revenue across the board, particularly when it comes to online, is increasing rapidly.

For players and those that enjoy online casino games like the Wolf Gold slot, it’s great, but it’s also opening up more jobs in an ever-growing industry.

One job that has always seemed glamorous within the casino world, is the role of a croupier. Certainly by the look of Hollywood movies that appears to be the case, anyway.

However, is being a croupier all it’s cracked up to be? We take a look at the pros and cons of becoming one…

The Pros

There are tons of great positives about working as a croupier. It’s one of the most thrilling jobs around, and while it may not appear as lucrative as say an accountant or a banker, you’ll certainly get more stories from it. Among the main perks include:

A Thrilling Environment

Everyone visiting a casino is there to have a good time, and the settings of casinos are usually plush and colourful. This all leads to a pleasant working environment, especially compared to the banks of desks you’d find in an office space. In fact, many have often compared it to working in the entertainment industry, given that you’re actually front of house and required to do a lot of socialising with clientele.

You Could Travel The World

In some instances it can be the perfect job for the jetset lifestyle. Most cruiseliners will have a casino and land one there and you could be in Barcelona one day, Venice the next, perhaps even the Bahamas three weeks later. It’s a great opportunity to see the world and get paid for it!

The Tips

And in any casino, there will be ample tips – many more than you would get working in a cafe or restaurant. If you find yourself on the high rollers table then you really have struck gold and you can pick up some fantastic tips, especially if you offer a personable and entertaining experience.

Room for Progression

There are many jobs available in a casino and a croupier is towards the lower end of the scale. It’s relatively easy to move into being a pit boss or casino manager over a couple of years if you work hard and dedicate time and energy to it.

The Cons:

Naturally, there are downsides too. Which may not work for some, but for others they won’t be outweighed by the pros involved. Among the main cons are:

Low starter salary

Your first job within a casino may start on a pretty low salary, while you may also have to start at the bottom in terms of the casino itself too. You’re not immediately going to get a job as a croupier at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, for example. You’ll have to start local and build up your trade and experience.

You always have to be switched on

There’s no down time when you’re on a shift. While in office jobs you can perhaps spend an hour looking at Twitter, when on the casino floor you have to be continually happy and positive, continually engaging and always helpful. Which can be exhausting, although there are ways you can try and maintain happiness at work.

Sore losers

Naturally, with money on the line, there can be an element of sore losing among some customers, and while usually security will come and deal with them quite swiftly, you may sometimes find yourself vulnerable or under threat of abuse. Thankfully, this is a relatively rare occurrence.

Whether it’s a good career move for you or not is entirely up to you, but there are plenty of positives about the role, but some negatives that you have to be the judge of whether they’re too much for you before dipping your toes into the rather exciting world of casino.
