Update: Austria defeats Romania 4-1 in Davis Cup
Austria’s tennis team has defeated Romania 4-1 in Group 1 of the Europe-Africa zone of Davis Cup on Sunday, after the winning matches by Dominic Thiem (7th ATP) against Nicolae Frunza ( 611th ATP) 7-6(2), 7-6(3), 6-3 and Gerald Melzer defeated Bogdan Borza 6-1, 7-5.
The Romanian pair Nicolae Frunză/Horia Tecău defeated the Austrian pair Dominic Thiem/Philipp Oswald 7-6(1), 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 on Saturday in Wels, so that the host team leads Romania 2-1 after day two.
Austrian Dominic Thiem defeated Bogdan Borza (707th ATP) 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 on Friday in Wels, and Austria led Romania 2-0 after the first day of the match for remaining in Group 1 of the Davis Cup Europe-Africa zone. The match lasted one hour and 54 minutes.
In the first match on Friday Gerald Melzer (133rd ATP) defeated Dragos Dima (489th ATP) 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Austria was the favourite of this encounter, although Romania led 3-2 in direct matches.
