Gymnast Marian Dragulescu, European champion in 2004 and silver and bronze medallist at the Olympic Games in Athens, 2004, will protest on Thursday in front of the Youth and Sports Ministry for being excluded from the national team for medical reasons.

Dragulescu was excluded from the national gymnastics lot Wednesday evening. He will stage the protest by laying the national flag on the sidewalk and the cups and medals won for Romania, as journalist Dorin Chiotea informs on his Facebook page.

The gymnast received the ‘fit for effort’ opinion from cardiologists, after having an ablation, nevertheless the Romanian Gymnastics Federation does not want to assume risks. Dragulescu is willing to compete on his own responsibility, by signature.

The well-known gymnast will thus not be able to defend his European medals won last year, at the coming European Championships in Glasgow next week.

Aged 37, Marian Dragulescu is multiple World and European champion, silver and bronze medallist at the Olympic Games.

Coach Marius Urzica: He has a health problem

Men’s gymnastics team coach, Marius Urzica said on Thursday that Dragulescu hasn’t got the go ahead from the National Institute for Sports Medicine (INMS) to compete at the European Championships in Glasgow. There is no possibility for him to compete on his singnature, he said.

“All sorts of information have surfaced and are not correct. Firstly, Marian Dragulescu hasn’t been excluded from the team. Secondly, he has a health problem, he has a heart operation and the institute for sports medicine, observing the European norms, has told him that he is to be monitored for three months and he is not allowed to put intensive effort. This is why he hasn’t received the medical go-ahead and he was denied the right to compete for the European Championships,” Marius Urzica said.
