Update – Wimbledon: Sorana Cirstea, Alexandra Dulgheru, and Mihaela Buzarnescu – surprise victories in first round
Sorana Cirstea (51st WTA) – photo 1 – is the first Romanian tennis player to reach the second round at Wimbledon 2018, after defeating Magdalena Rybarikova (19th seeded, semi-finalist in 2017) 7-5, 6-3.
Coming from the qualification rounds, Alexandra Dulgheru (photo 2) has defeated on Monday Krystina Pliskova 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, also to reach the second round, where she will face Venus Williams.
Mihaela Buzarnescu has also qualified to the second round, after an incredible comeback against Aryna Sabalenka (32nd WTA) to win 6-8 (3), 6-1, 6-4. In the next round Buzarnescu will play against Katie Swan (204th WTA), who has defeated Irina Begu on Monday.
Romanian tennis player, Gabriela Ruse (195th WTA), has failed to qualify, although she had no less than 6 match balls against Agnieszka Radwanska (30th WTA). Final score: 3-6, 6-4, 5-7.
Simona Halep, 1st WTA, will play on Tuesday against Kurumi Nara (Japan. 26, 101st WTA).
