US Open: Sorana Cirstea through, to face Sharapova in the second round. Niculescu – defeated, Buzarnescu – withdrawn. Mariu Copil has abandoned.
Romanian tennis player, Sorana Cirstea, 51st WTA, has qualified on Tuesday to the second round of US Open, after defeating Alison Riske (US) 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. In the next round she will face Maria Sharapova, 22nd seeded.
Cirstea and Sharapova have met only once, in 2012, in Beijing, the Russian tennis player won 6-2, 6-2.
Monica Niculescu was defeated by Julia Glushko (Israel) 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In turn, Mihaela Buzarnescu, 21st WTA, announced one hour and a half before the match that she withdraws from the tournament due to unhealed ankle injury in Montreal. She was replaced by Mona Barthel.
“I am sad. I’ve decided not to play, it is better this way! It was a tough decision, it’s for the better and for my health. I will find out how the recovery goes on, my target is to be in full health,” Buzarnescu said for ProSport.
In the men’s competition, Marius Copil has abandoned due to medical reasons, in the third set against Marin Cilic at the score of 7-5, 6-1, 1-1 in favour of his opponent.
