Weightlifting: Gabriel Sîncrăian, suspended eight years for doping
Romanian weightlifter Gabriel Sîncrăian has been suspended for eight years by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), after having been tested positive for testosterone during the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where he won the bronze medal in the 85 kg category.
According to the IWF, Sîncrăian’s suspension is calculated from August 12, 2016 and is due to expire on August 12, 2024.
The International Weightlifting Federation also announced that it has suspended Alina-Alexandra Popovici until August 11, 2020 for doping with stanozolol.
Weightlifter Gabriel Sîncrăian, who won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Rio, failed the doping test of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on August 29, 2016.
IWF announced in October 2016 that four weightlifters, among them Gabriel Sincraian, broke the anti-doping regulations at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and were thus disqualified.
Gabriel Sincraian won the bronze medal at the 85 kg category with a total of 390 kg (172 kg in the snatch event, 217 in the jerk event). Same weight also managed to lift Kazakh Denis Ulanov, but the Romanian athlete, being lighter, was ranked third. Sîncrăian weighed 84.33 kg, while Ulanov was 84.95 kg. The gold medal was won by Kianoush Rostami (Iran) with 396 kg. Sîncrăian had been suspended because of doping during 2013-2015.
