Romanian weightlifter Gabriel Sîncrăian has been provisionally suspended since September 30 by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) for a positive doping test at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where he won the bronze medal in the 85 kg category, the President of the Romanian Weightlifting Federation Nicu Vlad said on Tuesday.

“I do not know what temporarily means for them,” Vlad said, who criticized the confusion that reigns regarding this event, as a measure was decided upon more than a month after the end of the competition.

“We received from the IWF a written paper on September 30, saying he is temporarily suspended. I don’t understand and I don’t know how to comment. There are very few cases when sample A has had a problem. Who can afford lawyers and everything that follows?… it leads to large expenses and this boy cannot afford it, for certain,” Nicu Vlad said.

“The anti-doping committee with the Romanian Weightlifting Federation had talks with Sincraian, he said he took no drug. He said he only took nutritional supplements. He was asked to bring them along for analysis, but says he does not have them anymore,” Nicu Vlad added.

According to Vlad, if Sincraian is found positive with the second sample, then he is to be excluded from sports for life because he had been suspended before (September 23, 2013-September 23, 2015), Agerpres informs.

Weightlifter Gabriel Sîncrăian, who won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Rio, failed the doping test of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on August 29.

Gabriel Sincraian won the bronze medal at the 85 kg category with a total of 390 kg (172 kg in the snatch event, 217 in the jerk event). Same weight also managed to raise Kazakh Denis Ulanov, but the Romanian athlete, being lighter, was ranked third. Sîncrăian weighed 84.33 kg, while Ulanov was 84.95 kg. The gold medal was won by Kianoush Rostami (Iran) with 396 kg.

Sîncrăian was suspended because of doping during 2013-2015.
