Wimbledon: Simona Halep, defeated by Hsieh Su-wei! Buzarnescu, Begu, Niculescu in the last sixteen round in doubles

Unseeded Hsieh Su-wei sprung the latest shock at Wimbledon on No.1 Court on Saturday, as the wily veteran saved a match point en route to upsetting World No.1 Simona Halep, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The World No.48 trailed 5-2 in the final set but broke the French Open champion in the ninth game to stay alive in the decider, and saved a match point with bold, two-fisted groundstrokes from the baseline in her ensuing service game, wtatennis.com informs.

The former Wimbledon doubles champion and World No.1 won the last five games of the final set for her first career win over a reigning singles World No.1.

“It’s my first win against No.1. It’s amazing to be there and fight against the nerves,” Hsieh told the BBC after the match. “At 2-5 down in the final set, it was a lot of support from the crowd, and they pushed me to fight from there. She played so well. If I don’t fight, I don’t come through,” she said.

Three Romanian tennis players in the doubles last sixteen

Romanian tennis player Mihaela Buzărnescu, 28th WTA, was defeated by Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic), seventh favourite, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 on Friday in the third round.

Romanians Irina Begu and Mihaela Buzărnescu qualified on Saturday in the last sixteen round of the women’s doubles, after defeating 6-2, 6-2 the Romanian-American couple Ana Bogdan/Kaylin Christian.

The 15th seeded won in 63 minutes and secured a checque of GBP 29,000 and 240 WTA points.

In the next round they will play against the 4th seeded pair Andreja Klepac (Slovenia)/Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (Spain).

Furthermore, the pair made up by Monica Niculescu and Belgian Kirsten Flipkens, 13th seeded,, won 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 against Sofia Kenin/Sachia Vickery. In the nex round they will face main favourites Timea Babos (Hungary)/Kristina Mladenovic (France).
