Wimbledon: Tecau/Rojer and Mergea/Bopanna through to the doubles quarter-finals. Monica Niculescu defeated by Timea Bacsinszky
The pair Horia Tecau/Jean Julien Rojer (Romania / Netherlands), 4th seeded, has qualified on Monday to the Wimbledon quarterfinals after defeating Lleyton Hewitt/ Thanasi Kokkinakis (Australia) 7 -6 (7/9), 6-3, 7-6 (7/1).
In the quarters Rojer/Tecau will play against the winners of the match between Pierre-Hugues Herbert / Nicolas Mahut (France – 10th seeded) and Marcin Matkowski / Nenad Zimonjic (Poland / Serbia – favourites number 7).
Romanian-Indian pair Florin Mergea / Rohan Bopanna, 9th seeded, has also qualified on Monday in the quarterfinals after a victory in four sets against Lukasz Kubot (Poland) / Max Mirnyi (Belarus) all completed in the tiebreaks: 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (8).
In the quarterfinals they will face the winners of the match which opposes Bob and Mike Bryan (US – world leaders and the main favourites) and Mate Pavic (Croatia) / Michael Venus (New Zealand).
The winners have secured a check for GBP 43,000 and 360 ATP points.
Also on Monday, in the women’s singles competition, Monica Niculescu was defeated by Timea Bacsinszky (Switzerland) 6-1, 5-7, 2-6, although she had a brilliant game during the first set and in the first part of the second set. Unfortunately, the second half of the set she had increasing difficulties in winning games on her own service, which proved decisive for the fate of the match.
