WTA releases statement regarding Garcia vs. Begu match: This matter is closed
The WTA has released a statement in response to the allegations of misconduct by French tennis player Caroline Garcia, during the match Caroline Garcia vs. Irina-Camelia Begu in Charleston on Monday.
Steve Simon, WTA CEO: “The highest level of professional conduct on court is paramount to the WTA and anything less is unacceptable. After thorough investigation, we have found no evidence to support these allegations. This matter is closed.”
Romanian tennis player Irina Camelia Begu, 34th, defeated on Monday French player Carolina Garcia (44th) 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (3) to qualify to the second round of the Premier tournament in Charleston, South Carolina.
At the score of 5-5, the 22 year old French allegedly made a racist comment against Irina Begu, saying “look, I’m going to lose against this gypsy shit”, according to Portuguese media quoted by gsp.ro.
