Annual inflation still negative in August, at -1.9 pc

Annual inflation remained negative in August at minus 1.9%, down from minus 1.7% in July, while the monthly inflation reached 0.51%, according to data released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
“Consumer prices in August 2015 versus August 2014 were lower by 1.9%, measured by the CPI (consumer price index – no) and by-1.7% according to HICP (Harmonised Index of consumer Prices),” INS informs.
In August 2015, the share of goods and services which registered price decrease, as compared to August 2014, was of 45.2%, those who registered increases in the range of 0 – 2.5% had a share of 30.4 %. The goods and services whose prices increased by more than 2.5% had a share of 24.4%.
The average rise in consumer prices in the last 12 months (September 2014 – August 2015) as compared to the previous 12 months (September 2013 – August 2014), based on the CPI was of 0.3%. Based on HICP the increase was of 0.5%.

Foodstuff prices fell by 0.79 pc

Foodstuff prices decreased on average by 0.79% in August against July, and by 7.15% as compared to the same month in 2014, the highest price decreases being registered by fresh fruit, vegetables and potatoes, while the eggs prices increased, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) informs further.
It is the third consecutive month of falling prices, after June 1, 2015, when the reduced rate of VAT to 9% for food and beverages came into force.
Non-food goods prices also dropped in August as compared to July by 0.54%, but increased by 0.77% against August 2014.
As far as services are concerned, the tariffs increased slightly in August by 0.02% as compared to July, and by 2% against the same month last year.
