Erste Bank appoints Sergiu Manea the first Romanian at BCR’s helm

Starting this fall, BCR, the largest bank in Romania and  member of Erste Group, will have a new CEO. BCR’s Supervisory Board appointed Sergiu Manea (43) as CEO, succeeding Czech Tomas Spurny, who decided to resign, a press release informs. He will leave the position after three and a half years at end-September.

“Tomas Spurny managed the bank in a crucial period for the future of BCR. There were tough times, but he successfully completed one of the most complex restructuring programs in the Romanian banking environment. Now, BCR is well prepared for a new period of growth and performance,” said Andreas Treichl, CEO of Erste Group.

Currently, Executive Vicepresident Treasury, Capital Markets and Group Large Corporates, Member of BCR Management Board, Manea has more than 15 years experience in financial markets, having worked for several international banks such as Citibank, ING, ABN Amro, Bank Austria Creditanstalt.

He also acted as managing partner of independent asset management and financial advisory services firm, Ithuba Capital, based in Vienna.

Since taking over BCR, in 2006, Erste has appointed three expat managers to run the bank. It’s the first time a Romanian is named by Austrian financial group at BCR’s helm.
