The National Bank of Romania (BNR) announced on Wednesday a reference exchange rate of RON 4.5240/EUR, up by 0.45% against the previous level and the highest level since December 20, 2016. The RON depreciation comes on the background of investors’ concerns over the street protests and the emergency ordinance approved on Tuesday by the government, analysts say. On Tuesday the reference exchange rate was of RON 4.5038/EUR.

The other currencies in the region were stable against the European currency.

“The local currency depreciated from the very first transactions, influenced by street protests against the government emergency ordinance to cut sentences for corruption deeds,” a report issued on Wednesday by Credit Europe Bank reads.

The USD, quoted indirectly as against the EUR, depreciated from RON 4.2072/USD to RON 4.1935/USD.

The Swiss franc appreciated from RON 4.2267/CHF yesterday to RON 4.2350/CHF today.
